Hello folks…. (deep voice)….. from sweet TnT dis is TNN…….  An’ I make music yeah…..sweet music…..(Ras Short I)..background music….

Jumpstation: Oh lorse! Oh Loss! Oh lost!; Education for all?; Soca daddy.

OH LORSE! ...OH LOSS! ...OH LOST!

Um.. um.. ummm…… what nex’?  When will it end?  When will they put us out of our misery?  Dem boys lucky dey ent horses, odderwise all now we lookin’ for ah new West Indies Cricket team (wit’ few exceptions!).

Boy, when ah see licks so, ah start tuh run, because ah say is me next tuh pass in de t’ing….. Ah mean tuh say, 4, FOUR consecutive losses to teams rated no. last and no. nex’ tuh last  in de worl’?!  Ah was too shocked tuh cry, to numb tuh get vex…. was like ah  horror story..!

Look nah, Zimbabwe bowlin’ simple ball, dey eh have no world rated batsman, England eh no “Team Rocky” either…could you imagine my distress when I see dem peltin’ over we stumps, an’ den swattin’ we bowlers like flies?

Check out Sunday.. we make 287 runs, ah eminently defensible total in ah 50 overs match, an’ dem fellas jus pick up deyself an’ make de score with balls to spare?   An’ if yuh see how we fieldin’… man pickin’ up ball an’ t’rowin’ it in like .. “yuh know dey eh goin’ an’ make dis total, so lemme cool mesef…”     No urgency, no desire tuh stifle de opposition, make dem respect yuh… nothin’…  As for dem bowlers… is better I did bowl…

Does de term “line an’ length” mean anyt’ing to bowlers nowadays?  Man sprayin’ de ball  like aerosol all over de pitch….  Not even ah bouncer tuh make de batsman say.. “Hmmm, ah better watch dis fella…”.   An’ den poor Nagamootoo… de fella eh play yet in de two test match an’ de 3 One days yet… an’ dey put de fellla on de team an’ ask him to bowl late in game when t’ings was lookin’ tight…  How yuh could do ah young boy dat?  Yuh eh have ah conscience or what?!

An’ people actually callin’ in an’ sayin’ dat Brian Lara “blight” de side, because since he come back de side losin’… never mind he top scorin’ or  at least in de 2 top highest scores for de last 5 games….   Blight?!  BLIGHT?!   Dat is what we ascribin’ poor performance to now…. ah blight?! Oh gosh man, be sensible for ah change, nah… he makin’ de bowlers bowl nonsense?  He tellin’ de rest of de team to bat like primary school chilren?  He have sooooooo much effect on ah team dat de manager, coach, captain an’ vice captain cyah control him?  Think again…in fact.. think ONCE!   An’ if is ah “blight”, matter fix… let dem hang ah piece ah “blue” round dey neck, carry ah obe seed in dey pocket, kill two fowl, take ah bush bath an’ yuh back in business…ent?

At least ah see one commentator agree wit’ meh… he say as soon as dey team psychologist gone de team fall apart….  Check de stats over de last 5 months an’ see… de nex’ piece ah talk of course, is dat de team shouldn’t be so dependent one man… but what ah sayin’ is dis… let de man work wit’ de team for ah 6 months… let him get dem togedder, make ah unit outta dem an’ den he could leave… but no… we pick up for two Tests… den we drop him… we bring him for one Series den we drop him….. ah lot of de players new to de side, is dey first trip overseas on tour, dey eh fully know all de ropes yet… for heaven sake keep de man till de end of de England tour, nah…. how yuh could build anyt’ing on dat quicksand foundation…an’ yuh wonder why we in dis mess…?

Well we out of de One Day tournament now, an’ we have 3 Tests to play against England still… we go see what de play go be….  Ah backin’ dem, but like de West Indies “Creaky” Board on England side….

EDUCATION FOR ALL.....?

It seems that once again we have a crisis of our own making.  Of course the major talking point over the last two weeks has been the “secondary education for all” issue, whereby it is said, all children sitting the Common Entrance exam and from next year, the Secondary  Entrance Assessment (SEA – Same Exam Anyway?) or something to that effect, will be placed in secondary schools.

The effect will be essentially secondary education for all students.  Good, a remarkable advancement if so, in spite of any teething problems that may occur.

There have been cases where children have been placed in schools which are still or have yet to be constructed, the government paying for children to go to private secondary schools, the teachers and standards which may be of dubious quality and the cases of children of low academic achievement being placed in situations where they are unable to cope, since teachers skilled to deal with these children are already in short supply and certainly are seldom hired by these private schools; in fact the government system does not have these teachers as an essential part of any secondary school.

There are several mistakes being made, which we will unfortunately be felt later on.  On a brief analysis one may encounter the following:

The reform of an education system, which is being widely touted, should not be within the gambit of any ruling party.  Education is one of the very foundations of modern society, health and social/public services being the other supports.  If either of these collapse, the society becomes dysfunctional.  Education reform needs to have the entire government (ruling party and opposition), as well as Teachers Unions, Parent Teachers Associations, public for a for discussion, educational consultants from home, within the region and even outside of the region, if we find there are system we need to adapt. No such has taken place.

Secondly, desks and teachers do not make a school; many of these private schools have no recreational facilities, open spaces or other avenues for restless teenagers to expend energy.  Added to the fact that these schools are not getting the best of the academic product, is a recipe for  internal problems.

In addition, there are slow learners, students who inherently have less academic ability than others and therefore need syllabi  and conditions to suit them, in order to facilitate their development.  We have not see it fit to test children entering schools for any learning disabilities, hearing or eye problems, whether they have dysfunctional environments to contend with and their need for counseling, nothing of the sort.

What about expansion of the syllabus to accommodate cultural appreciation, dance, music, technical and vocational  subjects on a larger scale and the frenzied pursuing of grants and scholarships so that students are exposed and better equipped to come back and serve their country within a global environment?

Sports and athletics are now a lost cause as far as development is concerned.  Students are basically herded like cattle in a large door, some get trampled and a chosen few survive.

A stroke of the pen and continued packing of classrooms which are basically unfit to cater for the needs of their intake population is in no way a forward move.

The word education has it's root in the word educare , meaning “to draw out of oneself”; essentially then it is about all round self fulfillment and development, an awakening of talents, a bringing forth of potential (academic and otherwise), not a frustration of the same.

We still await a reasoned response to our growing educational crisis.

SOCA DADDY:

Ah nex’ star burn itself out last week… Shorty (Ras Shorty I)  fall from de sky.. leaving ah trail of  glory behin’ him….

What ah could say about dis fella….. ah feel we still eh recognise how much we owe him for where soca music reach today…. jus’ how much of ah pioneer dis brudder was…. Ras was jus’ controversial at every turn…

Wen he come out wit’ dis soca beat, all de older performers start tuh rain verbal blows on him… how he destroyin’ de music… how he takin’ we dong ah fas’ road tuh Hell…  Shorty stick to he guns, an’ now soca international….!

Ah remember wen in simple lyrics de man put dong Endless Vibrations”  check out de openin’ lines….

Change de accent of  Carnival…
To ah groovy, groovy baccahnal…

And den in de nex’ verse

Change de musical structure…
Make it super sweeter….

An’ throughout de song, if yuh hear de bass lines an’ de horn sections blazing out de SO-CA …de SOul of CAlypso  he call it den…. in he long jumpsuits (dat was de fashion den… J ) chest expose…… well over six foot tall (hence “Shorty”, as only Trinis could humour him).. de Love Man heself…

An’ speakin’ of humor, de double entendre didn’t pass him by either…. ah remember de song about  de daughter of ah “Chinese Gentleman” who  found herself pregnant, an’ de father wanted tuh marry she off  to save embarrassment….  So happens dat de daughter name was KIM, so he wanted “ah man for Kim   Yeah, figure it out….J

An’ de perennial classic  “Money eh no problem”  ..if Ras did sing dat know it woulda still be relevant today…hear some ah dem…

De Archbishop say people in Trinidad doh pray….
Dat is why
we ketchin’ so much Hell today….
People comin’ to church regularly…
An’ all de conscious of is money…

My friends….(tell dem).
Money eh no problem…
My friends  …(tell yuh )..
Money eh no problem

Dem politicians today only full ah smoke…
Only makin’ foolish mistake an’ callin’ it joke….
So much people on de streets today..
An’ we still cyah build ah house for dem to stay..

My friends….(tell dem).
Money eh no problem…
My friends  …(tell yuh )..
Money eh no problem

Tell meh de man wasn’t talkin’ de truth…look around today…

An’ to compound de controversy, de “Om Shanti” which he swore he never intended as an insult to de Hindu community, himself havin’ grown up among people of East Indian descent…. which showed in both Om Shanti and Indrani…

Hear nah, “Om” was a seamless weave of East Indian rhythms an’ classic soca… ah couldn’t figure out where one end an’ de odder begin… dat was ah piece of musical genius!  Even now people have different opinions about “Om Shanti”..  you be de judge…..

Life today, unlike yesterday..
Friendship gone, leaving only hate and scorn..
Neighbour…living like stranger with neighbour..
No love, sah, no love sah, for one another…
To unite people as one,
I create ah song, which I hope will live on
From generation…
To generation, to generation, to generation….

Chorus :
Sing Om Shanti Om (x2)

(And then some Hindi, which ah doh understand)

The song you hear,
Is an Indian prayer..
From ancient times,
Created to soothe your mind……
In danger, in anger…remember..
Sing this mantra, this golden mantra from the Master…
This song is to enable people to struggle against the devil…
In this human jungle, is plenty evil……
Is plenty evil, is plenty evil….

Chorus:

Den all of ah sudden, in one year time de man leave de scene an’ gone to live in de forest wit’ he family....  readin’ Bible an’ singing/composing religious music alone….. wearin’ ah bedsheet an’  barefoot… people was shocked.. but dat was Ras Shorty….     He did t’ings he way, regardless of what people say or t’ink.. an’ even in de bush…he started “Jahmoo” or “Jah Music” to Minister to de nation….. in one way or anodder, yuh couldn’t separate de man from he music……

When he get sick, he refuse treatment an’ decide he would be cured or die… but he eh takin’ no “modern medicine”.

Well finally he leave we…. de Prince of Soca, De Soca Daddy, an’ to “Ras Shorty I” or if yuh prefer “Shorty”, peace unto him… Shorty was Tall Man an’ ah Giant in more ways dan one…..!  T’anks for de music…!

Editor's note:  The web editor and staff of TNN would like to extend it's sincerely condolences to the bereaved family members of Shorty.
